Lady Cobras defeat Salem, Wildcats surpass Wesson

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras hosted the Salem Wildcats Friday night for some action packed junior varsity and varsity action at the Snake Pitt.

The Wildcats varsity boys’ team pulled out the win in a close game with the Cobras with a final score of 79-73.

The Lady Cobras defeated the Lady Wildcats by a wide margin with a final score of 61-44. The junior varsity Lady Cobras also claimed a win with a 28-4 victory.

The Cobras play at home Tuesday night against Loyd Star. Junior High action begins at 4 p.m. and the varsity teams begin play at 6 for the girls and the boys’ play at 7:30 p.m.

Wesson 61, Salem 44 

The Lady Cobras upset the Lady Wildcats Friday night with a 61-44 win. Wesson led the game with top scorer Jashia Smith scoring 16 points including one three-pointer. Smith also led in defense with a total of eight rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Another top Lady Cobra player was Tashay Glasper with 14 points which included two three-pointers, three steals and one assist. The Lady Cobras suffered at the free throw line with a disappointing 3/14 attempts.

The top player for the Wildcats was Zoie Bridges who had a point total of 19. The top defensive player for Salem was Markeria Butler with 12 rebounds and added 10 points. The Lady Wildcats were 5/11 in free throw action.

Coach Rusty Newman commented, “The girls played well tonight. Offensively, we executed well and played together. This was a good win for us.”

Salem 79, Wesson 73 

The Salem Wildcats managed to turn a neck-and-neck contest into a blowout against the Wesson Cobras Friday night in Wesson.

The Cobras led the scoreboard for the whole game, but the Wildcats pulled the win in the final minutes of the game with a final score of 79 – 73.

Wesson had some high scorers but missed some crucial shots to pull the win. Cobra Junior Anthony Dixon was top scorer with a point total of 27 had six rebounds, three steals and one assist. Other top scorers for Wesson were Tyler Robinson with 18 points and Dartavious Dixon with 14 points. Robinson had nine rebounds, two steals and one assist. Dixon had five rebounds and one steal. The Cobras were 9/12 in free throws.

Salem’s Wildcats had several top scorers, which included Julius Faulk with 27 points and Leonardrick Riley with 19 points. Faulk had seven rebounds and four steals. Riley had two rebounds and two steals. Top defender for Salem was Bobby Gardner with 10 rebounds and a point total of 10. The Wildcats had an average of 9/17 in free throw action.

After the game, Coach Rusty Newman stated, “This was a tough game against a good Salem team. Defensively, we played bad. We gave up too many shots in the paint. Offensively, we played well until late in the game. We couldn’t get a shot to fall and made some crucial careless turnovers. We will regroup and try to learn from our mistakes.”

In JV girls’ action,  the Lady Cobras clobbered the Lady Wildcats 28-4. Wesson was led by Jerrineisha Gordan with a point total of 10 and four steals. Another top scorer was Alaysha Vaughn with eight points.
