Wilkinson Co. feasts on Cobras

WOODVILLE – The Wildcats owned the night and added another district win to their stats with a final score of 44-7 over the Wesson Cobras Friday night in Region 7-3A football action.

“I’m very proud of the effort our guys have given this year,” said Wesson head coach Ronald Greer. “The move up in classification has been a tough adjustment. We have many areas that we must improve in to become a more competitive football team. I have confidence that our guys will do the things necessary to become a better football team next fall.”

The game began with the Cobras having first possession of the game, but they lost the ball after three first downs then Wildcat senior D’Quenta Brown intercepted a pass.

The Cobras’ offense attempted to strike back by working the ball down the field but lost control again by fumbling the ball.

The Wildcats finished off the first quarter with senior Ladarian Peterson scoring the first touchdown of the night, followed by a successful extra point by sophomore Cleveland Spurlock, bringing the score to 7-0 Wildcats at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats’ offense took flight in the second quarter when senior Devin Voorhies scored back-to-back touchdowns. The Cobras were able to score when junior Quarterback Tyler Christmas made an 18-yard run into the end zone.

C.J. Viramontez made the extra point putting seven points on the scoreboard.

The Wildcats finished the first half by Peterson and Voorhies scoring touchdowns, bringing the score at half time to 32-7 Wildcats.

The Cobra defense worked hard to hold the Wildcats back in the second half, but senior Chavez Anderson made a 51-yard rush to the end zone in the third quarter.

Wildcats’ sophomore quarterback, Desmond Hunter, made a huge play at the end of the game by throwing a 39-yard pass to freshman Juntavious Cage, who ran 47 yards to score bringing the final score to 44-7 Tigers.

Offensively, Tyler Christmas was the leader for Wesson, completing four-of-nine passes for 44 yards and rushing for 60 yards on 11 carries.

Otis Smith contributed to the ground attack with 17 rushes for 88 yards.

Dartavious Dixon was the top receiver with two catches for 13 yards.

Defensively, Farrod Green was the top hitter for the Cobras with five tackles. Timothy Craft and Kendrick Brown provided four stops each.

The Wesson Cobras completed their 2013 football campaign with a 1-9 record overall and finished 1-4 in a tough 7-3A Region. Wilkinson advances to the first round of the Class 3A playoffs hosted Perry Central Friday night.
