Brookhaven Academy split a pair of games in their season opener against Copiah Academy Tuesday night in high school basketball action at John R. Gray Gymnasium,

In the girls’ action, the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels held on to claim their first win of the season with a 51-45 victory over the Lady Cougars. In the boys’ game, BA crushed the Colonels 65-41.

Brookhaven Academy resumes action Monday. They will host Oak Forest Academy for four games. Junior high tips off at 4 p.m., followed by varsity action at 6 p.m.

Copiah 51, Brookhaven 45

The Lady Colonels relied on their size in the post to overpower the Lady Cougars as Lindsey Walker pumped in a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Copiah. Taylor Wilson netted 15 points and collected seven rebounds.

“This was a hard fought game,” said Copiah Academy coach Ben Gardner. “Coach Mack Gardner had his girls ready to play. They out hustle and out played throughout the game. We were just fortunate to pull away at the end to secure the win.”

Seniors Madison Warren and Lindsey Winborne were the offensive leaders for the Lady Cougars with a team-high 12 points apiece. Hillary Wilson contributed eight points.

“The girls played hard,” said BA coach Mack Gardner. “Our execution was OK in our season opener. Copiah has a very good team, and they should win plenty of games. Overall, we still need to continue getting better in each and every game.”

Brookhaven 65, Copiah 41

The BA Cougars overcame a sluggish first quarter to thump Copiah and claim the first win of the season under new head coach Kyle Ray.

Senior guard Zac Smith poured in a team-high 19 points to lead Brookhaven Academy. Junior forward Peyton Hood provided a double-double in the season opener with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

“This was a exciting way to start the season,” said Ray. “We started the game off nervous, but settled down and played a lot better in the second half. Copiah has a very good team.”

Trey Moss was the top scorer for the Copiah Academy Colonels with a team-high 19 points. Dale Stratton contributed nine points.

In junior high action, Brookhaven Academy swept Copiah for a pair of wins.

The Lady Cougars roared past the Lady Colonels 36-21 in their opener. Sissy Byrd led BA with 11 points. Sophie Wilson added 10 points.

Rachel Moore paced the Lady Colonels with 13 points.

In boys action, Brookhaven Academy drilled the Copiah Academy Colonels 47-10. Dylan Winborne poured in a game-high 14 points to lead the Cougars.

Carson Flumm was the top scorer for the Colonels with four points.
