Jones County netters defeat Wolfpack

WESSON- In the last home match of the year, the Co-Lin tennis teams lost to Jones Junior College. The Wolfpack fell 7-2 and the Lady Bobcats blanked the Lady Wolves 9-0.

Playing their final home matches, sophomores Melody Smith lost 6-2, 6-0 to nationally ranked Anna Ready at No. 1 singles; Courtney Watts lost to Jenna Hegwood 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2; Savannah Brister lost to Brenda Hegwood 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Erika Dear lost to Elizabeth Wright 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Allie Dear lost to Krissy Stutts 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Caroleah Brister lost to Brooke Martin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.

In men’s action, Brock Smith continued his domination of No. 2 singles winning 6-0, 6-1 over Harrison Thomas. Co-Lin’s No. 1 singles player Dwain Perkins won a tightly contested match over Graham Lightsey 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 avenging a three-set loss to Lightsey in their first meeting at Jones. Sophomore Josh Smith, the only returning player from last year’s team, lost a heartbreaker 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 to Caleb Byrd in his final home match. Graham Watson lost to Josiah Lim 6-1, 6-0; Brandon Nettles lost to Ryan Young 6-4, 6-2 and Coleman Carraway lost to Robert Kiewit 6-1, 7-6.

The State Tournament will be held from Thursday through Saturday at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston.
