The Loyd Star Lady Hornets quickly took care of business Wednesday night as they blanked the Richton Lady Rebels 10-0 and complete a two-game sweep in the best of three series in the second round of the Class 2A state softball playoffs.
“It was good to get the win and advance to the next round,” said Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “Overall, I am proud of the girls. We started to hit the ball really well in the third inning after a slow start. Kelsie McCullough pitched a good game. She only allowed Richton to get one hit in her five innings of work.”
The Lady Hornets (22-2) advance to the third round of the playoffs and battle the winner of the Enterprise-Clark/Pisgah series. Loyd Star will have to travel Friday, but return to host Saturday. Game times have not been set.
Loyd Star 10, Richton 0
Loyd Star managed to overcome a sluggish start and got the offense rolling in the bottom of the third inning as they hammered the Lady Rebels with a seven-run explosion.
The Lady Hornets would add three more runs between the fourth and fifth inning to invoke the 10-run mercy rule and secure the win.
Kelsie McCullough tossed the victory for Loyd Star collecting one strikeout and only allowed one walk.
Vicky Walker suffered the loss for the Lady Rebels with two strikeouts and three walks.
Ali Gartman and Brooks Rushing were the offensive leaders at the plate for the Lady Hornets with a double and a single each. Megan Norton contributed a pair of singles. Hitting safely were Abigail Thornton, Madison Jones, Julie Smith and Raigan Smith.
Noel Richards recorded the only hit for Richton with a double.
