Hillcrest ends BA win streak

The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Thursday night falling the Hillcrest Christian School Lady Cougars 13-6 in MAIS softball action at Brookhaven Academy softball complex.

“We played intimidated throughout the whole contest,” said BA first-year coach Becky Flowers. “Overall, my girls did not quit. We kept fighting until the very end, and we manage to put together some quality at bats to make a great comeback in the fifth inning.”

The Lady Cougars of Brookhaven (6-3) will be in action today as they prepare to host the Parklane Lady Pioneers. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.

Brookhaven Academy’s football team will also be in action as they host a scrimmage game against Central Hinds, starting at 7 p.m.

Hillcrest 13, BA 6 

In a battle of Lady Cougars, Hillcrest came out strong and quickly capitalized on BA’s early defensive miscues to claim a 13-0 in four innings of action.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brookhaven Academy finally managed to get their offense clicking as they charged back and denied Hillcrest’s bid for a shut out by pushing across six runs.

The Lady Cougars of Brookhaven threatened to push more runs across the plate but Hillcrest ended BA’s hopes by securing the final two outs to secure the win.

Abbey Busby was the winning pitcher for Hillcrest with two strikeouts and two walks. Madison Humphreys (1K, 1BB) also saw some action on the mound in relief.

Alex Rae Smith suffered the setback for Brookhaven Academy with one strikeout and one walk. Olivia Lofton (1K, 2BB) pitched the final two innings in relief.

K.K. Jordan was the top hitter at the plate for BA with two singles. Lofton contributed a triple. Hitting safely were Anna Smith, Amanda Rushing and Morgan Walker.

Teri McCray, Katilyn Hayman and Busby powered Hillcrest’s offense with a pair of singles apiece. Skylar Patterson, Jordan Barksdale, Mallory Alford and Makenzie Christian hit a single each.

In junior varsity action,  Hillcrest blanked Brookhaven Academy 6-0.

Anna Grace Covington absorbed the setback on the mound for BA with four strikeouts and four walks. Madi Smith (1K, 1BB) also pitched in relief.
