BA Cougars thump ASC Rebels

LIBERTY – Brookhaven Academy’s senior runningback Connor Dorman rushed for 142 yards on 22 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns to give his team a balanced offensive attack Friday night as the Cougars captured their second straight win of the season with a 39-12 victory over Amite School Center Rebels in District 2AA action.
The Cougars came out strong and quickly set the tone early in the first quarter as Dorman cashed in a 3-yard run with 7:13 remaining. Trent Cannon was successful on three-of-six of his extra point kicks for BA.
BA continued to overpower the Rebels in the first quarter as they punched in their second rushing on Michael Fiorella’s four-yard run with 2:09 remaining as the Cougars lead 14-0 after one quarter of action.
In the second quarter, BA’s offense and defense continued to overwhelm the ASC as they kept the Rebels from scoring in the first half. The Cougars managed to increase their lead to 20-0 after Caleb Brown caught a 7-yard pass from Heath Hickman with 57 seconds left before halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to roll as they punched in their third rushing touchdown on the night on Dorman’s second three-yard run with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter.
The Rebel finally managed to break-up BA’s bid of a shutout late in the third quarter when Davin Booty plowed in a three-yard rushing touchdown with 5:13 left. ASC was unsuccessful on two attempts of the extra point kick.
In the fourth quarter, BA’s defense managed to put points on the scoreboard for the Cougars as Michael Fiorella intercepted a pass and returned it 22-yards to pay dirt with 5:55 remaining.
ASC quickly answered BA’s challenge on the very next possession as David Leyendecker returned the Rebel’s kickoff 99 yards for the touchdown with 5:39 left.
Dorman would score the Cougars final touchdown of the night with a 10-yard scramble to pay dirt with 4:29 remaining.
Senior quarterback Heath Hickman was BA’s offensive leader on the field as he completed 17-of-23 passes for 220.
Junior receiver William King again eclipsed the 100-yard mark gathering five receptions for 109 yards. Sophomore Caleb Brown had a touchdown catch.
Defensively, Garrett Pace had a monster night filling up the stat sheet. The senior defensive lineman had 12 total tackles, three hurries, a sack and one tackle for loss as well as a punt block that was recovered by senior Trent Nettles.
Senior linebacker Michael Fiorella picked off a pass and took it to the house for six and also had a rushing touchdown.
Brookhaven Academy (2-3, 1-1) continues their road tour next Friday as they prepare to invade Pelahatchie to tangle with East Rankin Patriots. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
