Brookhaven Academy senior catcher Anna Smith did what only one other Lady Cougars softball player has ever done. Despite being grouped with AAA players by the selection committee, Smith earned a spot on the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) AA/AAA All-Star team.

Smith was one of 12 players selected from the south AA/AAA divisions, which includes 24 teams. She was one of two AA players selected from the south. The game will be played Oct. 8 at Jackson Prep at 2:30 p.m.

“Every coach wants a leader like Anna Smith,” head coach Becky Flowers said. “Although quiet, her attributes, whether experiencing success or failure, in the moment, are consistent. She doesn’t reveal frustration and led by example.”

Smith hit for a .424 avg. and got on base at a .568 clip. She stole 35 bases in 36 attempts and has a .966 fielding percentage.

“College coaches have noticed her bat control skills and are considering her speed as a good fit in a utility player role,” Flowers added. “I know that whatever she decides to do for college, she will be prepared because competitive athletics is a great way to prepare our players for life after high school.
