Cobras thump Trojans, girls fall

WESSON- The Wesson Cobras hosted the Amite County Trojans Tuesday night in basketball action.

The Lady Cobras were defeated by the Lady Trojans with a final score of 72-40.

The Cobras beat the Trojans with a score of 85-78.

Wesson will travel to Sumrall Friday, December 5 to play the Surmall Bobcats. Girls play at 6:00 and the boy’s game begins at 7:30.

AMITE COUNTY 72, WESSON 40 

The Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Trojans with a disappointing loss of 72-40 Tuesday night.

Kayla Britt and Aurianna Vaughn led the offense for the Lady Cobras with 11 points each. Britt had 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Vaughn had 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Top defensive player was Carnesha Green who had 5 rebounds with a total of 3 points. The Lady Cobras were 17/29 in free throw action.

Amite County’s powerhouse Destiny Williams led the scoreboard for the Lady Trojans with 19 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 assist. Other top players for the Lady Trojans were Dalhia Taplin and Fredricka Smith who scored 10 points each. The Lady Trojans were 9/23 in free throws.

Coach Rusty Newman stated, “The girls didn’t play well tonight and only in spurts. Amite County has a good team and we have got to play a good game to compete. The big girl inside was too much for our girls to play against. We need to regroup and get ready to play Friday night.”

WESSON 85, AMITE COUNTY 78 

The Wesson Cobra Varsity Boys defeated the Amite County Trojans Tuesday night with a final score of 85-78.

Tyler Robinson led the cobras with 17 points, 2 steals, and 5 rebounds. Eric Rhymes also scored 16 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Other top scorers for the Cobras were Dartavious Dixon with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist, Anthony Jones with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists, and Tyler Christmas with 13 points and 4 rebounds. The Cobras were 23/35 in free throws.

Trojans top scorer was Tyrese Hackett with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Lavelt Steptoe scored 13 points. Other top shooters for the Trojans were DKenyace Roberts, Darrion Robinson, and Kevan Williams with 12 points each. Williams was top defender with 5 rebounds.

Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the win by stating, “The guys played with a lot of intensity, defended well and played good team ball. I’m proud of the guys for playing a good game.”
