Loyd Star sweeps Bogue Chitto

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets captured a sweep over their Lincoln County rivals, the Bogue Chitto Bobcats in high school and junior high basketball action Friday night at Loyd Star Gymnasium.

In the girls contest, the Lady Hornets rallied from behind in the second half to edge the Lady Cats 43-40.

In boys’ action, the Hornets overpowered the Bobcats to claim an 81-51 victory.

Loyd Star returns to action Tuesday as they prepare to host the St. Aloysius for four games. Junior high action starts at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 p.m.

Bogue Chitto will also be in action Tuesday night as they visit Wesson to take on the Wesson Cobras for four games. Junior high games begin at 4 p.m. Varsity games is schedule to start at 6 p.m.

Loyd Star 43, Bogue Chitto 40 

The Lady Cats and the Lady Hornets provided an exciting contest for their basketball fans as both teams fought from the start. In a close first quarter of action, the Lady Hornet held a 15-14 advantage.

In the second quarter, the Lady Cats managed to take control of the first half with a 12-2 run to secure a 26-17 lead at halftime.

In the second half of action, the Lady Hornets fought back into contest with a 15-9 run to end the third quarter trailing BC 35-32.

In the final quarter of action, the battle heated up as both team fought back and forth in a close match, but Loyd Star managed to put together an 11-5 run to claim the win.

“The girls did a great job fighting back in the second half,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “In the first half, we played well in spurts but it felt like we were just going through the motions against a good team like Bogue Chitto. Overall, I was very pleased with my girls efforts and not giving up when we were down.”

Victoria Cupit paced the Lady Hornets (4-1) comeback with a team-high 13 points. Marcey Givens contributed nine points. Hannah Dickerson was the leader on the boards with 10 rebounds and scored six points. Jordan Shelby also scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Zariah Matthew powered the Lady Cats (7-2) offense with a game-high 20 points. TaNeisha May chipped in with nine points and leads on the boards with six rebounds.

“”Loyd Star out rebounded us tonight,” said BC coach Christi Terrell. “They played really well in the second half, while we did not put the points on the board and did not rebound.”

Loyd Star 81, Bogue Chitto 51

The Hornets’ high octane offense was to much for the Bobcats to handle as Loyd Star took control of the contest in the first quarter with a 20-9 run.

In the second quarter, the Hornets continued to overpowered Bogue Chitto, but the Bobcats did not give up. Loyd Star put together a 22-14 run to take a 42-23 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Hornets continue their offensive scoring spree with a 21-12 run in the third quarter and nipped BC 18-16 in the fourth quarter to preserve a 81-51 win.

“The guys came out and played really well in the first half,” said Britt. “Overall, I was glad to give everyone some playing time.”

Senior forward Edrick Alsworth pumped in a game-high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Hornets. Levi Redd contributed 12 points.

Jeremiah Perkins was the offensive leader for the Bobcats scoring a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. D.J, Nunnery chipped with a 17 points and had five rebounds.

In junior high action,  Loyd Star swept Bogue Chitto. The Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Cats 24-15.

Andrea Butler directed the Lady Hornets with nine points. Johnna Norman provided six points.

Cheyenne Hall netted six points to lead BC. Karley Leake and Kemilyah Clay contributed four points each.

In boys’ action, Loyd Star knocked off Bogue Chitto 54-38. Dane Smith powered the Hornets with a game-high 29 points. Zabien Price added 17 points.

Maliak Richardson led the Bobcats with a team-high 23 points.
