Wesson clobbers McLaurin

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras took charge Friday night to add another win to their record as they swept the McLaurin High School Tigers in high school basketball action at the Snake Pitt.
In the boys’ contest, the Cobras dominated the scoreboard against the Tigers to gain a 74-27 blow out victory.
In girls’ action, the Lady Cobras defeated the Lady Tigers with a final score of 55-36.
The Cobras will take a break over the Christmas holidays, but will start back up on Dec. 30 in Tylertown for the Dexter’s Holiday Tournament.
Game times are as follows: Dec. 30 – Wesson vs. Varnado – girls at 3 and boys at 4:30; Jan. 2, 2015 – Wesson vs. Purvis – girls at 4:00 and boys at 5:30; and Jan. 3, 2015 – Wesson vs. South Pike – girls at 1 and boys at 2:30.
Wesson 55, McLaurin 36
The Lady Cobras upset the McLaurin Lady Tigers with a 55-36 win in Wesson Friday night.
Senior Kayla Britt led the Lady Cobras with a total of 20 points which included one three-pointer, five steals, one assist and seven rebounds. Other top Wesson players were Tashay Glasper with nine points, three steals and five rebounds, Jashia Smith with eight points, two steals and six rebounds and Carnesha Green with seven points, one steal and an impressive 10 rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 16/29 in free throw action.
McLaurin High School’s Mary Maxwell topped the Lady Tigers list with a point total of 25 which included six three-pointers. The Lady Tigers were 4/7 in free throw action.
“The girls played a good game and executed well,” Coach Rusty Newman said. “It was a good team win. I’m very proud of the girls for their effort.”
Wesson 74, McLaurin 27
The Wesson Cobras added another win to their record with a final score of 74-27 over the McLaurin Tigers.
Anthony Jones, Cobra junior, led the night with 23 points, five steals, one assist and six rebounds. Other top Cobra scorers were Eric Rhymes and Tyler Robinson who scored 10 points each. Rhymes had one steal and two rebounds, and Robinson had one steal and six rebounds. Top rebounder was Farrod Green with eight rebounds and a point total of nine. The Cobras were 14/19 in free throws.
Tiger’s top scorer was J.T. Horton with a point total of eight. The Tigers had an average of 8/23 in free throw action.
“The guys played intense defensive and that led to easy offense,” Coach Rusty Newman said. “This was a good team win, and I was glad to give everyone some minutes of playing time. I’m proud of my guys.”
