Cougars roar past Trinity, girls fall

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars captured a 52-32 victory over Trinity Episcopal Saturday afternoon during basketball action at John R. Gray Gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Cougars saw their two-game winning streak come to an end as the Lady Saints defeated BA 59-45.

Brookhaven Academy will be in action Monday as they prepare to welcome the Parklane Pioneers to town to play a pair of varsity games, starting with the girls contest at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

Trinity 59, BA 45 

The Lady Saints and the Lady Cougars (3-15) came out scoring in the first quarter as Trinity managed to prevail 16-12. In the second quarter of play, the Lady Saints managed to extend their lead with a 17-7 run to take a 33-19 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Trinity managed to secure the win as both teams scored 26 points apiece in the final two quarters.

Sophie Wilson paced the Lady Cougars with a team-high nine points. Anna Michael Smith and Edie Riley chipped in with eight points apiece. Mary Claire White netted six points.

D’Asia Mitchell powered the Lady Saints with 18 points. Jasmine Ivory contributed 11 points and Dionna Jackson scored 10 points.

BA 52, Trinity 32 

The Cougars extended their winning streak to three games after coming out strong in the opening quarter with a 10-6 run and continued it in the second quarter with a 9-4 run to take a 19-10 lead into halftime.

In the second half of action, the Cougars (10-7) turned up the heat on the Saints and outscored Trinity 33-22 in the last two quarters of action to secure the win.

Senior Peyton Hood provided a dominating double-double performance for the Cougars with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Caleb Brown contributed nine points and Drake Flowers scored seven points. Both had four rebounds each. Austin Smith added six points and grabbed three rebounds.

Demond Fleming paced the Saints with 11 points. Jacarius Caston chipped in with nine points.
