The Brookhaven Regional Arts Guild welcomes residents to visit the Mississippi Hill Country Blues exhibit, in the Lincoln County Public Library this month.

The exhibit features photographs from George Mitchell during a 13-day trip around Mississippi’s Hills Region documenting Blues musicians and singers during the summer of 1967.

On Monday, members of BRAG gathered at the Lincoln County Public Library to assemble more than 40 black and white photographs from Mitchell’s collection.

Nancy Hanks-Myers, a member of BRAG, said the organization chose to bring the exhibit from the archives at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, which has several exhibits that they allow organizations and libraries around the state to showcase in their respective communities.

“I think anything that involves history is significant,” Hanks-Myers said. “It’s not just about the Delta and the Blues but the people who live there as well.”

The photographs include artists such as Jessie Mae Hemphill, Ada Mae Anderson, R.L. Burnside and Joe Callicott accompanied by a video for which arrangements can be made to view by emailing brookhavenregionalartguild@gmail.com or call BRAG at 601-833-3144. BRAG requests that everyone who’d like to view the video as a group contact the organization.

“We should be proud the Delta has produced such wonderful performers,” Hanks-Meyers said speaking of the blues and its influence on society and modern music. “These roots are Mississippi. Anyone who enjoys this kind of music would enjoy this exhibit.”

BRAG will host a reception for the exhibit on Thursday, Jan. 29 in the Lincoln County Public Library. The public is invited to see the exhibit before it closes the next day and taste good food made by BRAG members.

“Nobody gives a reception like us,” Sue Minter, a BRAG member, said.

Mississippi Hill Country Blues: Photographs by George Mitchell will be showing from Monday Jan. 5 until Friday Jan. 30.
