Wesson falls to Wilkinson Co twice

WESSON- The Wesson Cobras hosted the Wilkinson County Wildcats Friday night for the last home game of the regular season at the Snake Pit.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Cobras battled in a close game against the Lady Wildcats but lost with a final score of 44-37.

In boys’ action, the Wesson Cobras boys fought hard against the Wildcats but also fell with a final score of 72-62.

Region 7-3A Tournament action begins Tuesday at Wilkinson County High School.

Wilkinson County 44, Wesson 37 

The Lady Cobras (12-15, 4-6) were defeated by the Lady Wildcats (2-8) with a 44-37 final score Friday night.

Senior Kayla Britt led the Lady Cobras with a total of 13 points and had three rebounds, five steals and two assists. Other top scorers for the Lady Cobras were Jashia Smith with nine points and Tashay Glasper with six points. Smith had nine rebounds, and three steals and Glasper had five rebounds, and one assist. The Lady Cobras were 12/33 in free throw action.

Wilkinson County’s Katie Hull powered the Lady Wildcats with point total of 15 and had 14 rebounds. The Lady Wildcats were 3/6 in free throw action.

Coach Rusty Newman stated, “The girls just did not come ready to play. We played sloppy on both end of the court. Hopefully, we can get back on track and play a lot better as we begin tournament action.”

Wilkinson County 72, Wesson 62 

The Wesson Cobras (19-7, 6-4) lost to the Wilkinson County Wildcats (4-6) with a final score of 72-62 Friday night.

Sophomore Eric Rhymes was the top scorer for the Cobras with a point total of 19, which included three three-point shots. Rhymes also had four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Another top was junior Anthony Jones with 12 points and had five rebounds. The Cobras were 6/13 in free throws.

The Wildcats’ top player was Travion Jones who had a double-double performance of 33 points and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats were 9/16 in free throw action.

Wesson Coach Rusty Newman commented on the lost by stating, “We did not play with the intensity that we needed to win. Wilkinson came ready and played a good game. Now, we must regroup and get ready to bring our intensity Thursday.”
