Lady Hornets edge Bogue Chitto

BOGUE CHITTO – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets escaped Bogue Chitto with a 1-0 victory over the Lady Cats Friday night in a non-divisional fastpitch softball contest.

“This was a good defensive game for both teams,” Loyd Star Coach Jan Delaughter said. “Mackenzie Smith pitched a good game and kept Bogue Chitto off balance at the plate. Raigan Smith managed to get a clutch hit in the sixth inning to help us win the game.”

The Lady Hornets (5-2, 2-0) continues action Tuesday as they prepare to travel across Lincoln County to Enterprise to take on the Lady Yellow Jackets for a big Region 7-2A test. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 5 p.m., followed the varsity contest at 6:15 p.m.

The Lady Cats (5-3, 2-0) will also be in action Tuesday as they travel to Vicksburg to battle the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes in Region 7-1A action. The varsity game will start first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the junior varsity game.

Loyd Star 1, Bogue Chitto 0 

The Lady Hornets and the Lady Cats came out and provided an exciting defensive ball game for their softball for their fans as both teams fought back-and-forth in a scoreless contest until the top of the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Hornets managed to get Abagail Thornton on base after hitting a single to begin the inning. Thornton worked her way over to third base after stealing second base. With two outs, Loyd Star’s Raigan Smith hit a single to score Thornton to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth and the seventh innings, the Lady Cats threatened to tie the game up or take the lead, but Loyd Star’s defense denied BC’s threat to secure the win.

“This was a great defensive game for both teams,” BC Coach Scot Leggett said. “Loyd Star played solid on defense and managed to capitalize on our mistake. Overall, the girls played hard, but we just did not get the hits we needed to win.”

Mackenzie Smith was the winning pitcher for the Lady Hornets with three strikeouts and one walk.

Christian Black suffered the setback relief for the Lady Cats with one strikeout and two walks. Alana Nettles (2K, 1BB) started for Bogue Chitto.

Thornton was the offensive leader at the plate for Loyd Star with two singles. Madison Jones ripped a triple. Hitting safely were Julie Smith and Raigan Smith.

Daley Roberts directed the Lady Cats’ offense with two singles. Mallory Allen had a single.

In junior varsity action,  Bogue Chitto defeated Loyd Star 6-2.

Codi Leggett tossed the win for BC with five strikeouts and no walks. Ally Floyd absorbed the setback for Loyd Star with one stikeout and two walks. Kelsie McCullough (0K, 1BB) also pitched for the Lady Hornets.

Baileigh Jackson, Codi Leggett and Karley Leake paced the Lady Cats at the plate with two singles apiece. Stevie Montgomery had a single.

Johnna Norman led the Lady Hornet with a triple. Hitting safely were Lesley Walker, Christie Rose Patterson and Malori Cade.
