SUMMIT – Southwest head football coach Tucker Peavey has announced the hiring of DeMorrius U. Jones as an assistant coach. Jones comes to Southwest following three successful seasons as a defensive assistant at Jackson Prep.
“I’m really excited about this new opportunity ahead of me,” Jones said. “I’m thankful for my three years at Prep, (but) I’m looking forward to a new beginning in my life.”
A native of Laurel, Jones is a graduate of Jones County Junior College and Belhaven University. He played football at JC in 2006-07 and was a member of the 2007 team that played for the state championship.
He also played football at Belhaven and graduated from the University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration (he is currently working toward a Master’s degree in Sports Science). He played in the 2010 NAIA Senior Bowl Classic and recorded a game-record eight tackles.
While at Belhaven, Jones served as a volunteer assistant linebacker/defensive line coach during spring training prior to his senior season.
After graduation and a year in private business, Jones began his coaching career at Jackson Prep in 2012. During his three seasons with the Patriots, the team compiled an overall 37-4 record while winning three straight AAA South titles as well as three straight overall championships.
Jones and his wife, Dylse, have two sons-DeMorrius “Duece”, Jr. (two years old) and Dawson (10 months old).
