Thomas, Watts finish strong in State Track meet

PEARL – Loyd Star’s freshman Abby Thomas and West Lincoln’s junior Jason Watts competed in the Class 2A/4A/6A Track and Field State Championship Saturday at Pearl High School.
In the girls’ event, Loyd Star’s Thomas finished fifth overall in the girls’ 3200-meters run and eighth in the girls’ 1600-meters run.
Thomas finished in fifth place in the girls’ 3200-meters run with a time of 13:34.33. In the girls 1600 meter, she placed eighth with a time of 6:35.54.
This was Thomas’ first year to compete in the track and field events for Loyd Star.
Earlier in the school year, Loyd Star began their first year in high school cross-country. Thomas, a freshman, finished second in the MSHAA cross-country state championship. Her overall averaged time in the girls’ 5K run is 21:22.
In the boys’ event, West Lincoln’s Jason Watts captured the bronze medal in the boys’ 3200-meters run and placed eighth in the boys’ 1600-meters run.
Watts, in his second year of competition for West Lincoln in the track and field events, took home the bronze medal in the boys’ 1600-meters run with a time of 5:28.13. In the boys’ 3200-meters run, Watts finished in eighth place with a time of 10:56.74.
Watts, a junior, also competes in the high school cross-country boys’ 5K run for West Lincoln.
