Loyd Star celebrates homecoming Friday

Loyd Star (2-3), led by second-year head coach Adam Cook, suffered a tough 33-18 loss last week to the Scott Central Rebels in Forest.

This week, the Hornets are hungry for a win as they take on the Stringer Red Devils for homecoming.

The Red Devils (2-3, 2-0), coached by John Brown, captured a big Region 4-1A victory over the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 43-14 at Troy Smith Field.

Last week, Stringer was led by senior running back Qwavyious Gandy with 121 yards rushing on 10 carries. Junior quarterback Kirk Williams led the aerial attack, completing four passes for 110 yards. Anthony Thomas was the top receiver with two catches for 100 yards.

Defensively, Will McCord and Spencer Bryan led the Devils with five tackles each. Ryan Dominguez and RJ Holifield contributed four tackles apiece.

Loyd Star’s top offensive performer last week against Scott Central was junior quarterback Parker Flowers. He completed 8-of-23 passes for 93 yards and rushed 52 yards on 18 carries. Anfernee Claire was the second leading rusher for the Hornets with five carries for 20 yards.

Lakin Wallace was the top receiver for Loyd Star with one catch for 42 yards. Shay Hodges caught two passes for 20 yards. James Beard caught two passes for 17 yards and Claire had two receptions for 13 yards.

Defensively, Flowers powered the Hornets with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery. Nicholas Smith provided 10 stops. Michael Harvey had nine tackles and a sack. Claire contributed seven tackles. Lakin Wallace had six tackles and a fumble recovery. James Beard intercepted a pass and returned it for an 85-yard touchdown.

My prediction: Loyd Star celebrates homecoming with a 35-21 victory.
