HAZLEHURST – The Wesson Cobras were blanked 30-0 by the undefeated Hazlehurst Indians in their first Region 7-3A test of the season Friday.

“I thought our guys played hard,” said Wesson head coach Ronald Greer. “We made a lot of good plays defensively but gave up a few too many big plays. “Hazlehurst has some explosive players on offense. We never got anything going offensively and the Indian defense had a lot to do with that. We need to regroup and get ready for new region foe Port Gibson next Friday night.”

The Cobras (3-4, 0-1) will host a new divisional rival Friday as they battle the Port Gibson Blue at 7 p.m. at Stone Stadium.

In the opening period of action, both teams struggled to get their offense going. The Indians threatened to put the first points on the scoreboard when they recovered a fumble on Wesson’s 33-yard line, but the Cobras’ defense denied Hazlehurst’s attempt.

Before the end of the first quarter, Wesson’s Jamarcus Patterson managed to sack Indian quarterback Ladarrious Williams as Hazlehurst was threatening to score. In the first few seconds of the second, Hazlehurst’s Damariun Wilson punched in the first touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run, and Williams ran in the two-point conversion to give the Indians a 8-0 lead.

On Hazlehurst’s next possession, the Indians wore down the Cobras’ defense with three quick first downs and ended up scoring again, when Jaquaveon Tillman caught a 23-yard touchdown pass in the end zone. Williams ran in another two-point conversion as Hazlehurst commanded 16-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Indians scored on their first possession as Anfernee Jordan made an impressive run of 60-plus yards to put the Indians in scoring position again – which helped Damariun Wilson make his second touchdown of the night on a three-yard run. The Indians had a 22-0 lead after three quarters of action.

In the fourth, the Cobras’ offense tried to put together a late run as quarterback Peyton Burns completed passes to Jeremiah Stapleton and Cornelius Barlow, but Wesson failed to make it into the end zone.
