Lady Cougars thump Wesson

WESSON – The Lawrence County Lady Cougars easily defeated the Wesson Lady Cobras 10-0 Monday night.

“Lawrence County has a very good team,” said Wesson coach Michelle Nunnery. “The girls played hard, but we just did not get the hits that we needed to stay in the game. Now, we must quickly regroup and focus on Franklin County.”

The Lady Cobras honored senior Cheyenne Gladden prior to the game.

Wesson will travel to Franklin County today to face the Lady Bulldogs for a division test. The junior varsity game starts at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Cougars caught fire in the second, plating five runs to claim an early 5-0 lead.

Lawrence County added to its lead, scoring two runs in the third inning, two runs in the sixth inning and one more run in the seventh to win 10-0.

Jordan Harp was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cougars with six strikeouts and four walks.

Callie Fortenberry powered the Lady Cougars with a double and two singles. Elizabeth Smith provided three singles. Alysa Lambert contributed two singles. Tyranesha Davis and Amanda Rushing had a double each. Sydney Pevey and Julianna Johnson hit a single each.

On defense, Elizabeth Smith was the top player for the Lady Cougars with six outs at first base with assists from Jordan Harp, Maddie Kirkland, Amanda Rushing, Sydney Pevey and Tyranesha Davis.

Laynee Crapps suffered the setback on the rubber for Wesson with no strikeouts and one walk.

The Lady Cobras were led by Brooke Jones, Laynee Crapps, Catherine Wilson and Cheyenne Gladden with a single each.

On defense, Harmoni Ashley had 10 outs at first base with assists from Brooke Jones, Arie Douglas and Katie McSweyn. The outfielders were also busy with Cheyenne Gladden fielding four outs in right field and Shelbi Maxwell fielding three outs in centerfield.

In JV action, the Lady Cobras got a win over Lawrence County by a final score of 6-0.

Wesson pitcher Katie McSweyn threw three strikeouts and had two walks. Anna Claire Crow had two outs on first base with assists from Molly Granger and Nikki Guess.

On offense, Anna Claire Crow directed the Lady Cobras with a double. Hitting safely were Natalie Bonds, Arie Douglas, Katie McSweyn, Bre Westbrook and Nikki Guess.
