Defending 2A state champions and the current No. 1 ranked 2A team in Mississippi invaded Perry Miller field Friday night to begin district play and blanked the West Lincoln Bears 58-0.

The Bears’ offense struggled against the defensive line of the Yellow Jackets and were unable to get the ball in scoring position during the first quarter. Bassfield relied on their speedy running game to put 18 points up during the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets continued their dominance in the second quarter by tacking on 20 additional points on the scoreboard and went into halftime leading 38-0.

West Lincoln’s defense had a big defensive stop as Chase Owen intercepted a deep pass by Bassfield.

In the second half West Lincoln was unable to stop the Yellowjackets as they added 20 additional points for a final score of 58-0.

Coach Willie Brumfield response to the game, “Bassfield is the defending state champion for a reason. However, I am proud of the way our kids played tonight. We had a few starters out this week and had to shuffle several players around. A couple of areas of concern we addressed last week were our turnovers and penalties. Tonight we had zero turnovers and only one penalty. It is extremely difficult to simulate the speed and quickness we saw tonight, and we were about a step away several times from making plays both offensively and defensively. Hopefully we can get everyone back healthy next week.”

The Bears completed two of nine passes for 22 yards including a fake punt pass to Jayden Rushing for 20 yard. West Lincoln’s ground game was limited to 64 yards on 38 carries.
