WESSON – The Wesson Cobras hosted their region rivals, the Wilkinson County Wildcats, for a big division test in the final regular season game Friday night. The Cobras suffered a disappointing 33-6 loss to the Wildcats in Stone Stadium.

“Turnovers early in the game really put us in the hole,” said Cobras coach Ronald Greer. “We had penalties in crucial situations that kept drives going for Wilkinson County.”

“Now, we will need to regroup and get ready for a new season next week as we enter the playoffs as the No. 4 seed out of Region 7-3A,” he continued. “We will be traveling to Choctaw County next Friday night for the first round.”

The Wildcats took charge during the first quarter with two quick touchdowns in the first minute of action on runs by Wilkinson sophomores Travion Jones and Jaquarious Stewart.

Wilkinson County’s Desmond Hunter also rushed for a 5-yard touchdown to bring the score to 19-0 at the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter, the Cobras never got past the 50-yard line and lost possession when Wildcat Jones intercepted the ball in Cobras’ territory. Wesson’s defense held the Wildcats with some crucial blocks by Jermaine James, Farrod Green, Davion Frye and Bobby Pritchard to keep the score at 19-0 at halftime.

Wesson came back after the half and worked the ball down the field with four first downs. The Cobras ended up in the end zone with a completed 15-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Christmas to receiver Farrod Green. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, only putting six points on the board for the Cobras.

Wilkinson County attempted to score on their next possession as they marched down the field to the Cobras’ 25-yard line, but the drive ended when Cobras’ Farrod Green intercepted the ball.

Wilkinson County would later add to their lead in the fourth quarter, when Desmond Hunter rushed 14 yards to the end zone. On Wesson’s next possession, Wildcat Robert Swint intercepted the ball. He ran the ball back for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful bringing the final score of the game to 33-6.
