Chargers end Wesson’s season

ACKERMAN- The Wesson Cobras traveled north on Highway 25 to face the Choctaw County Chargers Friday night for the first round of the Class 3A playoff game. The Chargers ended up eliminating the Cobras from competition with a final score of 47-19.

“Our guys played well early in the game,” said Cobra coach Ronald Greer. “We had a hard time containing their quarterback who is a gifted athlete. I’m proud of our guys for making it to the postseason, but disappointed that we will not be moving on.”

The Chargers took charge early in the game by scoring on the first possession of the night when Tyler Riley rushed 57 yards to the end zone. Kicker David Ramirez made the extra point putting 7 points on the scoreboard for Choctaw County.

Wesson battled back by working the ball down the field with 4 first downs, which resulted in quarterback Tyler Christmas running the ball in for the touchdown and a successful extra point by Tre Fleming.

Choctaw County came back and retaliated with another touchdown by Jamarcus Bradley. Wesson answered with a quick score to make it even when Farrod Green returned a kickoff 80 yards for the touchdown, but the extra point fell short putting the Chargers ahead by one point.

The Chargers ended the first quarter with another touchdown by Tyler Riley bringing the score to 21-13 going into the 2nd quarter.

Wesson hopes surged when Blake Runyan recovered a fumble on the kickoff but then fizzled out when Charger Woody Vowell intercepted a pass. Choctaw County worked the ball down the field and Anquan Smith scored. The Cobras fumbled on the next play and Jamarcus Bradley scored on the next possession upping the score to 34-13 at halftime.

After halftime, both teams started to lose momentum, when the Chargers lost possession when Cobra Justin Boone recovered a fumble and then the Chargers intercepting a pass from the Cobras.

Choctaw County came back strong with a 24-yard touchdown by Tyler Riley. Charger Jamarcus Bradley scored on the next possession also. Wesson fought back with a touchdown by Tyler Christmas, which finished the game with a final score of 47-19.

Wesson finished the contest with 40 rushes for 113 yards. Tyler Christmas was 1 for 8 in passing for 11 yards totaling 124 total yards of offense. The Cobras’ top rushers were Tyler Christmas with 14 carries for 39 yards and 2 touchdowns and Kendrick Brown with 10 rushes for 24 yards. Farrod Green had an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Defensively, the leading tacklers were Tyler McLeod with 6 tackles and Timothy Craft with 5 tackles. Enrique Smith, JaMarcus Smith and Farrod Green had 5 tackles each.

Choctaw County collected 393 yards rushing yards on 36 carries and passed 37 yards on 6-of-13 attempts.

Coach Ronald Greer summarized the season by stating, “I appreciate our players and assistant coaches for all of their hard work this season. I would like to give special thanks to our hard working managers: Justus Davis, Sam Carraway and Dalton Brand, our videographers coach Rusty Newman and Cade Rast and statistician Coach Michelle Nunnery.” He continued, “It takes a lot of effort from a lot of folks and I appreciate them all including our cheerleaders and their coach Michelle Berch.”
