Wesson defeats Purvis, Lady Cobras fall to South Pike

DEXTER – The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras captured a pair of wins Friday night against the Purvis Tornadoes in Dexter’s Holiday Tournament.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Cobras defeated the Lady Tornadoes with a final score of 44-16.

In boy’s action, the Cobras blew over the tornadoes with a final score of 78-52.

In Saturday’s game, Wesson travel back to Dexter High School to take on the South Pike Eagles. The tournament was cancelled at the end of the third quarter of the Lady Cobras versus the Lady Eagles contest due to a tornado warning.

The Lady Cobras trailed behind the Lady Eagles 57-34 after three quarters of action.

Wesson returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Loyd Starr to battle the Hornets in four games. Junior high action tips off at 4 p.m., followed varsity games.

Wesson 44, Purvis 16 

The Lady Cobras pulled the win from the Lady Tornadoes Friday night with a final score of 44-16.

Junior Jashia Smith led the Lady Cobras with a total of 17 points. Other top Cobra players were senior Kayla Britt who averaged nine points and sophomore Aurianna Vaughn had eight points. The Lady Cobras were 5/16 in free throw action.

“The girls played well as a team both offensively and defensively,” Wesson Coach Rusty Newman said. “Hopefully we can continue this type of play after the break and carry it over into district.”

Wesson 78, Purvis 52 

The Wesson Cobras rolled over the Purvis Tornadoes with a close win of 78-52.

Anthony Jones, Cobra junior, led the night with 23 points on the scoreboard. Senior Dartavious Dixon was also a top scorer with a total of 11 points. Another top scorer for the Cobras was Tyler Robinson with a total of 13 points. The Cobras were 7/15 in free throws.

“The guys played well,” Newman said. “Defensively we played hard and that led to a lot of easy offensive opportunities. This was a good win for us.”

South Pike 57, Wesson 34 

The Lady Cobras lost to the Lady Eagles Saturday in a three-quarter contest and a final score of 57-34.

The Lady Cobras, were lead by Tashay Glasper and Carnesha Green with 10 points apiece. Aurianna Vaughn also was a top shooters with eight points.

Wesson Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the loss by saying, “South Pike was too much for us. We didn’t handle their pressure well at all. We will look at the film and see where we need to improve.”
