Lady Cougars, Wildcats prevails

The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars and the Salem Wildcats claim victories in Saturday’s non-divisional basketball action at John R. Gray Gymnasium.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cougars crushed the Lady Wildcats 60-40.

In boys’ action, the Salem Wildcats defeated the BA Cougars 63-46.

Friday’s contest between Brookhaven Academy and Prentiss Christian was postponed due to water problems in the gym. The game was reschedule to be played in Prentiss on Feb. 2.

BA returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Natchez for more district action against the Adams County Christian School Rebels. The Cougars and Rebels are scheduled to play six games, starting at 3 p.m. The varsity girls will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

Brookhaven Acad. 60, Salem 40 

The Lady Cougars and the Lady Wildcats battle in a close contest as both teams ended the first half tied at 21-all at halftime.

In the second half, both teams continued their battle, but the Lady Cougars (7-16, 3-1) managed to squeeze out a slim lead against the Lady Wildcats with a 15-14 run to lead 36-25.

In the final quarter, the Lady Cougars’ offense exploded with a 24-5 run to secure the win.

BA had four players to score in double figures as Hillary Wilson led with 16 points and five assists. Mary Claire White and Anna Michael Smith contributed 14 points each. Bailey Stewart chipped in with 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Anna Michael Smith was the leader on the boards with seven rebounds.

Markeria Butler paced the Lady Wildcats with 18 points. Zoie Bridges provided 17 points.

Salem 63, Brookhaven Acad. 46 

In the boys’ contest, the Salem Wildcats came out and quickly took charge in the first quarter to claim a 20-11 advantage.

In the second quarter, the Cougars (12-10, 3-1) rallied back to trim down Salem’s lead but trailed at halftime 36-24.

In the second half, Salem outscored BA 27-22 in the final two quarter of action to secured the win.

Senior forward Peyton Hood directed the Cougars with a game-high 29 points and five rebounds. Caleb Brown chipped in with nine points, and Austin Smith scored four points. Drake Flowers had three points and two rebounds, while Ross Felder added one point and had one rebound. Trent Nettles helped on the boards with four rebounds and had five assists.

Salem was led by three players scoring in double figures as Leonardrick Riley lead the charge with 15 points. Donavan Harness contributed 13 points. Jaylen Toney pumped in 11 points and Julius Faulk provided nine points.
