SUMMIT – They did it again. For the second time in a week the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat in the waning minutes of a game. Co-Lin overcame an early scoreless streak to take a 58-55 win over Southwest on Thursday night in Summit.

Who is going to score for Co-Lin? It’s a question that head coach Kenny Bizot has asked himself throughout this season as he leads a team that has only two sophomores. At times early in the game at Southwest, it looked like nobody would be the answer to that question. After a Terry Morris jumper put the Wolves on the scoreboard, the team went ice cold from the field. Co-Lin would not score again for over seven minutes. They trailed 12-2 and lacked any kind of offensive spark. However, the Wolves scratched back into the game by keeping the pace slow and only 23-19 at halftime.

Co-Lin didn’t take their first lead until 5:46 remained in regulation. The Wolves went up 44-43 on a Jadarius Haymer jump shot. Haymer, a Yazoo County product, came off the bench to score 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Haymer also grabbed seven rebounds.

Southwest would respond with a Cliff Fernandez dunk to make the score 45-44, but Fernandez drew a technical for hanging on the rim. Terry Morris sank both technical free throws to make the score 46-45 and Co-Lin would never trail again. The biggest shot of the game came with 1:46 remaining and the game tied at 48. Morris found Jordan Lumpkins on a cross-court pass and Lumpkins knocked down a corner 3-pointer to put Co-Lin up 51-48. It was the eighth made 3-pointer of the season for the sophomore from New Orleans. Co-Lin made their free throws late, and despite twice fouling a Bear on a 3-point attempt in the game’s final seconds, the Wolves held on for the win.

Co-Lin dominated Southwest on the boards, outrebounding the Bears 47-34. Co-Lin won despite only shooting 35% by holding the Bears to 32%. Co-Lin committed a season low eight turnovers.

Freshman forward Donte’ Watson led Co-Lin with 13 points while also grabbing eight rebounds. Morris chipped in 10 points and made three assists. Lumpkins finished with seven points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Chris Williams scored six points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked three shots.

Trent Jeffries scored a game high 22 points for Southwest. Co-Lin previously topped Southwest 57-54 on Jan. 20 in Wesson.

Co-Lin next plays on Monday, Feb. 16 when they host he Meridian Eagles for a 8 p.m. tipoff in Wesson.
