WOODVILLE – The Wesson Cobras suffered a tough 70-59 loss in the Region 7-3A tournament championship game against the Crystal Springs Tigers Friday night at Wilkinson County

“We came out flat tonight and Crystal Springs came out with intensity and shot well,” commented Cobra coach Rusty Newman. “We dug ourselves a deep hole early on but the guys refused to quit and got back in the game.”

“We trailed 11 at the half, but managed to grab a lead later in the fourth quarter,” continued Newman. “Foul trouble and injuries caught up with us and we were unable to get the job done. I’m extremely proud of my guys. We entered into the tournament missing two starters, but played hard and gave ourselves an opportunity to win the championship. Now, we have got to regroup and gear up for the playoffs next week.”

Wesson will host St. Andrews Saints for the opening round of the Class 3A State playoffs Tuesday night. Game time is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the Snake Pitt.

Crystal Springs 70, Wesson 59 

The Wesson Cobras were defeated by the Crystal Springs Tigers Friday night with a final score of 59-70. The Tigers took an early lead but the Cobras came back strong after halftime but not enough to take the win.

The top Cobra player was senior Dartavious Dixon, who scored 22 points and had five rebounds and three steals. Other top players were senior Farrod Green with 13 points and sophomore Eric Rhymes with 12 points. Green had 11 rebounds and two assists. Rhymes had four rebounds and two steals. The Cobras were 12/18 from the free throw line.

The Tigers top player was Zyn Baylis, who had a point total of 16 and had two rebounds and two steals. Miguel Powell had 15 points and two rebounds. Top defender was Jericko Morris with 13 rebounds and scored eight points. The Tigers had an average of 15/26 at the free throw line.
