SUMMIT – The Copiah-Lincoln Wolves took game one of the Coca-Cola Challenge Presented by Powerade in exciting fashion as the Wolves needed an extra inning to beat back the Southwest Bears 10-6 in 10 innings on Sunday in Summit.

The game had previously been scheduled for a week earlier and was originally listed as two seven-inning games. Rain forced the rescheduling and the doubleheader was condensed to a single nine-inning affair.

Co-Lin led 3-1 after the first inning as the Wolves scored one run on an Adrian Brown single, another run on a sacrifice fly by Logan Smith, and their final run when Brown stole home. The Wolves added another run in the third inning via a Choc Hubbard fielder’s choice that scored Co-Lin catcher Reed Taylor.

Co-Lin led 4-3 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Southwest put three runs on the board to take a 6-4 lead. The Wolves would tie the game up in the top of ninth inning. That’s when Co-Lin sophomore Wesley Watts began the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Jeremy Moore. Both Watts and Moore moved up a bag when Brown was hit by a pitch. Watts scored when the next Co-Lin batter, Reed Taylor, was also hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded and one away, Co-Lin trailed 6-5 before a sacrifice fly by Smith scored Moore to tie the game at six all.

Freshman Cole Langdon started on the hill and gave up four hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out four in six innings of work. Freshman Jackson Cole (1-1) picked up the win in relief as he tossed the final four innings. Cole gave up three runs (two earned) and stuck out three while walking two and surrendering four hits. Cole settled in nicely after initially giving up three runs in the seventh to pick up his first collegiate win.

As they had on Saturday against Delgado, the Co-Lin bats delivered heaviest with two-outs. In the top of the 10th, with two away and pinch-hitter Jackson Twitty on first base, freshman Jordan Antley singled to get aboard. Moore, a redshirt freshman from Florence, played the part of the hero as his single scored Twitty from second and moved Antley to third base. A double by Brown next cleared the bases, as it scored Antley and Moore. Brown would then score on an RBI single by sophomore Logan Smith.

Antley finished 4-6 with a double, Taylor went 3-4 with an RBI, and Brown hit 3-4 with three RBIs. Moore (3-6), Wesley Watts (2-4), and Garret Goodwin (2-4) all finished with multiple hits for Co-Lin. The Wolves finished with 18 hits as a team.

Before the game each team was presented with a check by Coca-Cola Bottling of McComb. To retain the challenge trophy the Wolves will need to win one game of the doubleheader when the two teams next meet on March 11 in Wesson.

Co-Lin was scheduled to play on Wednesday against Baton Rouge for a doubleheader, but it was postponed due to the weather. The Wolves will return to action Saturday as they host a doubleheader against Ms. Delta, starting at 2 p.m.
