Wesson beats Brookhaven, falls to Cathedral in Classic

The Wesson Cobras secured a split in two days of action in the Ole Brook Baseball Classic at Moyer Field.

In the Cobras captured a 5-2 win over the host Brookhaven Panthers Friday afternoon, but the lost Saturday contest 8-3 to the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave.

The Cobras will be in action this week as they will participate in the Lawrence County Spring Break Tournament, starting Thursday in Monticello. Wesson takes on Brookhaven at 2 p.m. The Cobras will also see action in the tournament Friday as they battle the South Pike Eagles at 11:30 a.m. and West Lincoln Bears at 2 p.m.

Wesson 5, Brookhaven 2 

Wesson rallied back to outscored the Panthers 5-0 throughout the rest of the contest, after Brookhaven captured a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Mack Smith pitched the win for the Cobras with four strikeouts and two walks. Penn Wilson suffered the setback for the Panthers with eight strikeouts and 11 walks.

The Cobras were lead at the plate with singles from Mack Smith, Jimmie McQuage and Max Daughdrill.

Blaine Moak was the top hitter at the plate for Brookhaven with a double. Darrian Wilson and Wilson hit safely with a single each.

Natchez Cathedral 8, Wesson 3 

The Wesson Cobras traveled to Brookhaven Saturday afternoon to face the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave at the Brookhaven High School Tournament.

The Cobras fell to the Green Wave in a 3-8 loss. Cobras’ starting pitcher, sophomore Preston Middleton, threw two strikeouts and had five walks. Relief pitcher, sophomore Peyton Burns, had one strikeout and four walks.

The top hitter for the Cobras was senior Tyler McLeod who hit two doubles and a single. McLeod also played strong defense on the field with six outs at shortstop and assisted with two other outs. Ryan Traxler was also a top fielder with four outs in right field.

For the Green Wave, starting pitcher Sam Parker captured the win with three strikes and two walks. Quinton Logan (3K, 3BB) and Pate Shirley (1K, 0BB) also saw action in relief.

Top hitter for Natchez was Zack Flagman with a homerun (RBI-2) and a single. Craig Bradley also had a double and a single at bat. Top fielder for the Green Wave was Gabe Smith at first base with four outs.
