Brookhaven sweeps Franklin County

Brookhaven secured a sweep Tuesday night against Franklin County in Sinclair Gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Panthers (1-4) captured their first win of the season with a 45-43 victory over the Lady Bulldogs (1-6).

In boys’ action, the undefeated Panthers (6-0) thumped the Bulldogs to claim a 70-35 win.

Brookhaven will return to action Friday as it prepares to host the North Pike Jaguars. Junior varsity action tips off at 5 p.m., followed the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Franklin County will resume action Saturday. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will travel to Enterprise to battle the Yellow Jackets in four games. Action begins at 1 p.m.

Lady Panthers 45, Lady Bulldogs 43 

In the first half, the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Bulldogs to carry a 21-10 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs rallied back with a 18-12 run in the third quarter to cut into Brookhaven’s lead at 33-28. In the fourth period, Franklin County outscored Brookhaven 15-12, but the Lady Panthers held on to clinch their first win of the season as the buzzer sounded.

“I am glad to get our first win of the season,” said BHS coach Preston Wilson. “The girls played hard and gave a great effort. Jada Henderson had a great game for us tonight.”

Henderson powered the Lady Panthers’ offense with 13 points and four rebounds. Taylor Carter chipped in with nine points. Cheyenne Motley netted seven points and grabbed seven boards. Asia Byrd was the leader on the boards with eight rebounds and she scored six points. Miyah Miller and Mya Washington had three points each. Arnancy Arnold and Tamia Stallings added two points each.

Sierra Bethley pumped in a game-high 22 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Jasmine Treadway provided 14 points. Tradata Norman scored three points. Autumn Covington and Shemiah Amos had two points each.

Brookhaven 70, Franklin Co. 35 

The undefeated Panthers came out on fire in the opening quarter and dominated the Bulldogs to claim a 26-5 lead. They cruised to a 42-15 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to roll as they outscored Franklin County 28-20 to secure the win.

“We played with a lot of intensity night,” said BHS coach Jimmie Butler. “Our chemistry is getting a lot better as our football players are getting into basketball condition.”

Damarius Brooks poured in a game-high 18 points and had four assists to lead the Panthers. Lazorian McNulty chipped in with 12 points. Darrian Wilson provided 10 points, five rebounds and five steals. Garrick Smith was the leader on the boards with 11 rebounds and he scored seven points. Shon Blackwell also contributed seven points. Danarius Gray and Marte Jones netted four points each. Ricjard Marshall. Keith Robinson, Darius Bryant and Loffolliette Bogan scored two points each.

Jalon Dogan was the top scorer for the Bulldogs with nine points. Cameron Young provided five points. Ryan Johnson scored four points. Dominique White had three points. Tony Gibbs, Alexander Hunt, Dalivan Hunt, Jerdice Collins, Gerryon Bell, Ivan Hughes and Wesley Hines added two points each.

In girls’ junior varsity action,  Brookhaven defeated Franklin County 29-11.

Tamia Stallings directed the Lady Panthers with seven points. Miyah Miller and Yacoriuna Braxton contributed six points each.

Poly Harris paced the Lady Bulldogs with five points. Kellie Hunt scored three points.
