Man indicted in officer shoot-out

Indictments are being served from the most recent Lincoln County grand jury session in April. Indictments are only made public once the suspect has been served.

Christopher Leigh Hamilton, 40, of 603 Lola Dunn Road, was indicted on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting into a motor vehicle.

Hamilton’s indictment alleges that he fired at sheriff’s deputies who were trying to serve him warrants on Dec. 3.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Hamilton reportedly fired a rifle at officers after they made initial contact with him at the residence at 421 River Road Drive.

Deputies returned fire. Rushing said Hamilton was hit in the arm during the incident. Hamilton was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center after being shot by the deputies.

Hamilton is in the Lincoln County Jail with a $1,025,000 bond amount.

Cordarryl Lamond Bell

Cordarryl Lamond Bell, 24, of 510 E. Congress Street, was indicted for first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Bell’s indictment alleges that on or about Nov. 2, 2015, Bell willfully, feloniously, without the authority of law and with deliberate design, did kill and murder Aquarius Nelson, and attempted to cause bodily injury to Joshua Cole by discharging a firearm at Cole.

The Brookhaven Police Department responded to a report of shots fired on East Independence Street around 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2, 2015. Officers at that time said it was reported that shots had been fired into or at a house.

At 4:45 p.m., BPD was dispatched to King’s Daughters Medical Center in reference to a person being shot. Aquarius Nelson, 26, of 905 East Independence St., was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at KDMC, according to police.

Bell is in the Lincoln County Jail with a $1,000,000 bond amount.
