First place in Region 7-2A is on the line tonight when the Wesson Cobras (4-4, 2-0) host the Amite County Trojans (4-4, 2-0) in a Thursday night contest.

Amite County and coach Reginald Lumpkin have division wins over Bogue Chitto and Loyd Star. The Trojans have the second best passing offense in the region behind Wesson.

Senior quarterback Derick Cosby stands just 5-foot-5, but is effective throwing the ball, especially outside the pocket. Cosby has thrown for 1,066 yards and 10 TDs and five interceptions. He’s 72-of-135 on the season while averaging 133 passing yards per game. Cosby has also rushed for 228 yards and four scores.

Senior running back ShoShun Boss is the other primary weapon for AC. Last week in a 42-22 win over Loyd Star Boss carried 17 times for 188 yards and four scores. On the season he’s run 105 times for 765 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Trojans have faced some stiff competition this season with losses to 1A power East Marion, 3A Wilkinson County, 4A South Pike and 4A North Pike.

The Cobras and Amite County have two common opponents in Franklin County and Bogue Chitto. The Trojans defeated Franklin County 30-8 and BC 28-21. Wesson beat Franklin County 29-6 earlier this season and are coming off a 48-7 win against Bogue Chitto last Thursday.

Freshman signal caller Will Loy leads the Wesson offense with 1,406 yards passing and 14 scores. Loy has thrown three interceptions and is averaging 17.8 yards per completions.

Five different Cobras have caught touchdown passes, led by junior Antrelle Sims. Sims has caught 36 passes for 700 yards and seven scores. Junior Anterio Miller is second on the team with 309 receiving yards and senior Damien Smith has caught 15 passes for 294 yards.

With Damien Smith being used primarily as a receiver and junior Jason Edwards working back from an injury, junior Orlando Smith has emerged as the leading ball carrier for Wesson. Smith has rushed 98 times for 491 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The key will be the Wesson defense pressuring Cosby up front while staying disciplined as the Trojan offense is adapt at gaining yards on broken plays.

Wesson senior linebacker Scott Hutt leads the team with 78 tackles. Sophomore Collin McGowen is second on the team with 65 stops. Junior Terrance Haley has made a team-high nine tackles for a loss.

Freshman Chris Davis leads Wesson with a pair of interceptions while Haley has recovered three fumbles on the season.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Stone Stadium on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
