In honor of National Library Week, April 14-20, an array of events is under way at the Lincoln County Library, thanks to the local Friends of the Library.

The Lincoln County activities are among thousands of such celebrations across the country. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, connected by Facebook, texting and other online resources, libraries remain a human meeting ground, where people can come together to read, do hands-on research, or just feel a sense of community.

Appropriately, the theme of this year’s weeklong celebration is “Communities matter at your library.”

The Lincoln County Friends of the Library group has worked hard to plan and carry out daily activities to mark this special week.

Each day through Saturday, thousands of books will be on sale at the library, with proceeds going toward the library’s support.

Through the week also, there have been noon programs at the library, with those attending invited to bring a sack lunch. On Thursday, local Recreation Director Terry Reid, will speak, while Friday’s speaker will be Shirley Estes, representing the Master Gardeners of Lincoln County.

Thursday also will include a viewing of the movie, “The Hunger Games,” at 3:30 p.m. at the library. The event is free and also will feature popcorn and beverages.

Rounding out the week is a silent auction. Bids will be taken at the library from 9 a.m. Friday until 3 p.m. Saturday. Items for sale were donated by local businesses and community residents.

The Brookhaven library is part of a three-county regional library system that also includes Lawrence and Franklin counties. The Lincoln library is the headquarters of the group, which has a total of five libraries in the three counties.

Mayor Les Bumgarner signed a proclamation last week officially honoring the Lincoln County Library and the special week in Brookhaven.

The proclamation reminds us that libraries “are the heart of their communities, campuses and schools,” bringing “together community members to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.”
