WESSON – The Crystal Springs Tigers captured a sweep over the Wesson Cobras Friday night in Region 7-3A basketball action at the Snake Pit.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cobras suffered a disappointing 48-38 loss to the Lady Tigers.

In boys’ action, the Wesson Cobras were defeated 56-47 by the Tigers in a close, neck-to-neck game.

In the junior varsity boys’ contest, the Tigers outplayed the Cobras to earn a 52-42 win.

The Cobras will host Wilkinson County Tuesday night, for another huge region test. The junior varsity boys’ will start the at 5 p.m. The varsity teams begin play at 6 p.m. for the girls, followed by the boys’ play at 7:30 at the Wesson Attendance Center gymnasium

Crystal Springs 48, Wesson 38 

The Lady Cobras lost a tough district game to the Lady Tigers Friday night in a hard-fought 48-38 loss.

Sophomore Jashia Smith was the top Lady Cobra scorer with a total of 13 points and had an impressive night on the boards with 23 rebounds. Senior Brandi McInnis contributed nine points, which were three 3 pointers, two steals, one assist and four rebounds. The Lady Cobras were nine for 16 in free throw action.

The powerhouse player of the game for the Lady Tigers was sophomore Dominique Jackson who topped the scoreboard with 18 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Senior ShaQuan Byther provided 11 points, three rebounds and one steal. The Lady Tigers were 11 of 20 in free throw action.

This was a hard-fought physical game,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We came out and played well. We executed on both ends of the floor, but unfortunately, in the long run, their athleticism hurt us, along with foul trouble.

“I’m very proud of the girls for their efforts. We need to continue to play this way.”

Crystal Springs 56, Wesson 47 

The Wesson Cobras were beaten in district play by the Crystal Springs Tigers Friday night with a final score of 56-47.

Wesson’s top shooter was Junior Farrod Green who scored 14 points, six rebounds, six steals and one assist. Senior Marquis Lofton netted 11 points, one rebound, three steals and two assists. Junior Dartavious Dixon was the leader on the boards for the Cobras with eight rebounds, two assists and had six points. The Cobras were three for 11 in free throws.

The Tigers best all-round player was senior Adarius Miles who pumped in 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Senior Jeremy Archie added 12 points, one rebound and one steal. The Tigers had an average of eight for 17 in free throw action.

“It was tale of two halves,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “In the first half, we played well defensively and executed offensively. After the half, they came out with intensity and battled back from behind taking the lead. After that, we sort of shut down.

“This has been a big issue of us losing games in the second half, especially the third quarter,” continued Newman. “We will get back to work Monday and start on fixing this problem. The boys’ side of our district is going to be a toss-up, so if we can just get our act together. We are still very well in the mix.”

In junior varsity boys’ action, the Cobras were defeated 52-42 by the Tigers.

Freshmen Eric Rhymes led Wesson with 19 points, which included four 3 pointers, and had six rebounds and four steals. Freshman Miquell Powell was the top scorer for the Tigers with 13 points, two rebounds and one steal.
