Loyd Star blasts rival Enterprise

The Loyd Star Hornets had little to no problems Friday night as they swept all four games from the visiting Enterprise Yellow Jackets.

In the varsity girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets secured a 44-27 victory.

In the varsity boys’ game, Loyd Star never trailed as they overcame the Jackets 66-39.

Enterprise returns to action Tuesday night, hosting the West Lincoln Bears for Senior Night 2014.

Loyd Star 41, Enterprise 27 

Timely execution and points in the paint helped the Lady Hornets knock off Enterprise Friday night by a final score of 44-27.

The first quarter provided a back-and-forth affair for basketball fans as the two teams were deadlocked 9-9 after a quarter of action.

In the second quarter, Loyd Star gained a slight advantage as they carried a 20-16 lead into halftime.

Enterprise (9-16, 1-8), was unable to acquire any momentum in the second half as the Lady Hornets outscored them 24-11 to pull away for the victory.

Sophomore center Hannah Dickerson powered the Lady Hornets with 20 points and six rebounds. Jordan Shelby was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds and six points. Marcey and Megan Givens also chipped six points apiece.

“This was a big win to help us secure second place in the girls’ region race,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Overall, the girls are playing well together both offensively and defensively. I was very pleased with their effort.”

The Lady Jackets were led by Kristin Jergins’ 11 points. Alissa Barlow chipped in seven points for Enterprise in the loss. Hannah Kirtfield grabbed six at the boards to lead the Lady Jackets in rebounding.

Loyd Star 66, Enterprise 39 

The Loyd Star Hornets came out aggressive on defense and forced Enterprise into several early turnovers as they cruised to a 66-39 victory.

The Hornets jumped out early in the first quarter as they led 20-6 after the first period of action. Loyd Star increased their lead to 38-15 at halftime.

Loyd Star had four players score in double figures as Caleb Yarbrough led the charge with 14 points. Ryan Smith contributed 10 points each. Edrick Alsworth and Levi Redd added 11 points a piece for the Hornets. Ethan Newman paced the Hornets on the boards with seven rebounds.

Forrest Scott’s 12 points and seven rebounds paced Enterprise. Zach Hodges added 12 points and six rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (8-17, 0-9).

 In junior varsity action, Loyd Star captured a sweep over Enterprise.

In JV girls’ action, Loyd Star upended Enterprise 34-15. Mandy Russell led the Lady Hornets with nine points. Faith Berguron chipped in seven points for Loyd Star. Molly Burke fired in a game high 10 points for Enterprise in the loss.

In the JV boys’ contest, Loyd Star was victorious over Enterprise 40-25. Zach Arnold was the top scorer for Loyd Star with 14 points. Javion Beards had 10 points. Patrick Scott led Enterprise in scoring with seven points. Jontavious Smith, James King and Austin Carter each chipped in six points a piece for the Jackets.
