Marshall knocks off Lady Hornets

PUCKETT – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets saw their Cinderella season come to an end Thursday night as they fell to S.V. Marshall Lady Tigers 48-36 in the quarterfinals of MHSAA girls 2A South State tournament.

The Lady Hornets, coached by Gene ‘Moochie’ Britt, finished the season with a 16-12 worksheet. The senior less Loyd Star’s girls squad gained a lot experience in their first experience in the south state tournament.

The Lady Tigers quickly overpowered the Lady Hornets in the opening quarter to grab a 18-5 lead and continued their offensive scoring onslaught in the second quarter to claim a 29-13 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets managed to over come their early butterflies from the first half and provided a strong battle against Marshall. Loyd Star outscored the Lady Tigers 23-19, but fell to over come Marshall’s large lead to capture the win.

Sophomore center Hannah Dickerson was the offensive leader for the Lady Hornets with 12 points. Sophomore forward Jordan Shelby chipped in 9 points. Junior guard Marcey Givens had 8 points.

“The first quarter was the difference maker that hurt us,” said Britt. “We missed a lot of shots in the first half that could have helped us stay in the game.

“In the second half, they girls played a lot better,” continued Britt. “Overall, I was very pleased with my girls’ effort. They continued to work hard and did not quit. We had a great season this year. I would like to thank the girls for their accomplishments and we are looking forward on building these experiences for next year.”

Alexis Stewart directed the Lady Tigers with a game-high 14 points. Destiney Haymer contributed 13 points.
