MONTICELLO-Enterprise, Tylertown and Magee were winners on Day Three of the Southwest Mississippi Spring Break Baseball Classic at Lawrence County High’s Jimmie Davis Park.

In the first game of the day, the Enterprise Yellow Jackets handled Salem by a score of 14-0. In game two, the Tylertown Chiefs turned the table on Enterprise, beating the Yellow Jackets by an 11-1 score. In the final game of the day, the Magee Trojans banged out 18 hits in a 16-7 win over the host Lawrence County Cougars.

Five more games are on tap for Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. The Classic will conclude with five more games on Friday.

“It was a cool, windy day,” said host coach Cory Keyes of Lawrence County. “The wind made it a tough day to play baseball, but we’ve been able to play 12 of the 13 games scheduled so far and we should be able to get all of them in the next two days.”

“There are still plenty of good games for folks to come and see. We’ve got three more games, Brookhaven has three more games, and West Lincoln still has three more.”

ENTERPRISE 14, SALEM 0 

Enterprise had it’s way with winless Salem in Wednesday’s opener. Yellow Jacket right-hander Jackson Cole limited Salem to just 2 singles. He did walk 4, but was able to pitch out of two bases-loaded jams. Cole struck out 10.

Seventh-grader Hunter Richardson was the hitting star for Enterprise. He had 3 hits, including a grand slam homerun. Brady Watts also had 3 hits. Cole, Lane Boyd, Austin Fuller and Max Miller also had hits. The Yellow Jackets led 4-0 through 3 innings, then erupted for 10 in the fourth.

“I thought we played great,” said Enterprise coach Cass Brister. “We had good at bats, great pitching and played defense really well.”

Brandon Bossier and Camden Gilmore had hits for Salem. Brandon Bergeron pitched 3 good innings before running into trouble in the fourth.

TYLERTOWN 11, ENTERPRISE 1 

In the second game of the day, Tylertown rolled to an 11-1 win over Enterprise, despite getting just 3 hits in the 4-inning affair. The Chiefs benefited from 10 walks. Tylertown scored 3 in the second, 3 in the third and 5 in the fourth.

Peyton Harvey, Gabe Johnson and Justin Terrell had hits for Tylertown. It was Terrell’s fourth-inning double that ended the game. Keagan Kenney went 4 innings for the win. He allowed 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3.

Lane Boyd, Jackson Cole and Max Miller had hits for Enterprise. Austin Fuller, Alex Stafford and Reese Brocato pulled pitching duty.

“We walked to many people and because of that we didn’t have a chance to win the game,” continued Brister. “Overall, I think we have come a long way since the start of the season. I think that will carry over to district next week.”

MAGEE 16, LAWRENCE COUNTY 9 

The final game of the day was a hit-a-thon, with the two teams combining for 30 hits. Magee and Lawrence County were tied at 9-9 through 6 innings. With the tournament time limit having run out, the host Cougars got the potential winning run to third base in the bottom of the sixth, but could not score it.

The seventh inning was a disaster for the Cougars. Magee got 5 hits and took advantage of numerous Lawrence County miscues to score 7 times, and clinch the win.

“We had a bad seventh inning,” said long-time LCHS assistant Craig Davis, “but we had played a pretty good game up until then. We just couldn’t get them out.

“Out of 47 plate appearances, we struck out 1 guy. They swung and missed 6 times in the game. Give credit to Magee. I thought our pitchers were throwing well, but they hit everything we threw up there.”

Shortstop Devonta Calero had 4 hits to lead Magee. Alonzo Brown, and Nick Bullock each had 3. Chris Chatman was the fourth Trojan pitcher. He worked 1 and 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Will Jackson and Kasey Durr each had 3 hits for the Cougars. Kewaun May had 2 hits. Joshua Stephens, Kody Smith, Logan Greenlee and Marcus Atterberry got 1 hit. All 12 LCHS hits were singles.

Kody Smith worked the first 4 innings for Lawrence County and freshman Kasey Durr pitched the final 3.

Thursday’s action started with Franklin County taking on South Pike at 10 a.m. The Ole Brook Panthers were slated to take on South Pike in the second game. West Lincoln and Natchez Cathedral are scheduled for a 2:30 tilt. The final two games of the day involve the home team. Host Lawrence County will take on Franklin County at about 5 o’clock, and will play Hazlehurst in the evening finale.

Friday’s action will open with a West Lincoln-Tylertown battle at 10 o’clock, followed by an Ole Brook-Loyd Star contest.
