The Brookhaven Academy Cougars faced a do or die situation Friday afternoon in the second round of the MAIS State AA playoffs against a very talented Central Private School baseball team from Baker, La.
Having dropped a one-run decision to CP earlier in the week, the Cougars had to sweep the double header Friday night to continue their season. Like game one, both teams got outstanding pitching performances and saw the Rebels plate runs in the top of the sixth inning and then held on to secure the 2-0 victory to advance to the south state semifinals.
The Cougars, coached by Casey Edwards, conclude their season with a record of 17-10.
The Rebels broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the sixth with two runs and the Cougars responded by putting runners on base in the bottom of both the sixth and seventh innings but saw their hopes of producing runs dashed by big defensive double plays turned by the CP middle infield.
“We had some opportunities but I have to give CP credit, they made big plays on defense in crunch time,” said BA head coach Casey Edwards. “I’m proud of this team. They came to work every day and continually improved throughout the season.
“We have nothing to hang our heads about.” Edwards concluded, “I also have to mention our seven seniors. They were great leaders for our ball club and these guys will all be successful in life.”
Senior Newt Riley led the Cougars offensively with two hits. Alex Smith doubled for the Cougars. JP Jackson and Landon Nettles each singled adding to the Cougar cause.
Kris Tramplet led CP with two hits on the evening.
Bailey Warren suffered the setback on the mound in a solid performance for the Cougars giving up six hits, striking out eight and issuing no bases on balls.
Thomas Doucet went the distance for the Rebels to pick up the win surrendering five hits, striking out five and allowing just one base on balls.
Brookhaven Academy seniors suiting up for their last time for the Cougars were: Jacob Boyd, Parker Myrick, Landon Nettles, Newt Riley, Jacob Thurman, Bailey Warren and Steven Williams.
